The HKIE Aviation Scholarship 2023/2024
Background:
This Scholarship is offered by the Aircraft Division of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers
(“Aircraft Division”). It complements the existing and more general ‘HKIE Scholarship’ but
will focus on full-time undergraduate and diploma students studying aviation / aerospace
engineering programmes* at tertiary level in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region
(“Hong Kong”).
Aims:
The Scholarship scheme aims:
‧ to recognise the academic achievements of the outstanding full-time undergraduate and
diploma students studying aviation / aerospace engineering programmes* at tertiary level in
Hong Kong;
‧ to identify potential engineering students and develop them into future aircraft engineers;
‧ to promote the HKIE and Aircraft Division to aviation / aerospace engineering students in
local universities and tertiary institutions.
Awards:
The Scholarship in 2023/2024 cycle will be awarded to one full-time undergraduate or diploma
students studying aviation / aerospace engineering programmes* at a local university or tertiary
institution. The successful candidate will receive a certificate and a one-off grant of
HK$42,000.
Eligibility:
Candidate should:
‧ be a full-time undergraduate or diploma student studying aviation / aerospace engineering
programmes* at a local university or tertiary institution;
‧ have the right of abode or the right to land in Hong Kong or are permitted to stay in Hong
Kong without restriction;
‧ have outstanding academic achievements;
‧ be a Student Member of the HKIE or in the process of application for student membership;
‧ have strong leadership ability demonstrated in his / her extra-curricular activities and
community service; and
‧ be nominated by the Dean of Engineering Faculty / School or the Head of Engineering
Department of the university or tertiary institution.
Note: A student who has previously received the HKIE Aviation Scholarship will NOT be eligible
to apply for it again.
Application Procedures
‧ Universities and tertiary institutions offering aviation / aerospace engineering programmes*
will be informed of the Scholarship scheme and be invited to make nominations for the
Scholarship.
‧ Nominations should only be made by the Dean of Engineering Faculty / School or the Head
of Engineering Department. Each university or tertiary institution can nominate a maximum
of four candidates.
‧ The nominations must be submitted together with:
1) a statement of not more than 500 words, written by the candidate, on the topic “Why I
would like to be an aircraft engineer?”;
2) a statement of recommendation by the Dean of the Engineering Faculty / School or the
Head of Engineering Department who is in support of the nomination;
3) copy/ies of the candidate’s academic results at the university or tertiary institution;
4) copy/ies of other documentary proof.
‧ Nominations must be completed and returned to the Secretariat by e-mail on or before
Friday, 1 March 2024.
Selection Procedures
‧ The Judging Panel consists of senior members of the Aircraft Division and aviation industry.
‧ The selection criteria will be based on:
1) Academic results at the university or tertiary institution;
2) Enthusiasm in becoming an aircraft engineer;
3) Leadership ability demonstrated in his/her extra-curricular activities and community
service; and
4) Performance at the interview.
‧ The successful candidate must demonstrate their enthusiasm in becoming an aircraft
engineer in contributing to the general well-being of the community of Hong Kong.
‧ Candidates will be short-listed and invited for an interview tentatively scheduled for March
/ April 2024. Candidates not invited for interview by 31 March 2024 shall consider their
applications unsuccessful.
‧ The Aircraft Division reserves the right to reject or disqualify any application. The decision
of the Aircraft Division Judging Panel will be final. In the event of there being unable to
find candidates of sufficient merit, they may withhold all or any of the awards at their
absolute discretion.
‧ If, after an Award is bestowed, any fact supplied in the respective nomination is discovered
to be fraudulent or untrue, or an award recipient is proven to be associated with a fraudulent
or dishonourable act, the Aircraft Division reserves the right, after consulting the Panel of
Judges, to institute any actions deemed fit.
‧ The university / tertiary institution and the individual award recipient will be notified of the
results in April 2024.
Presentation of Awards
‧ A certificate and cheque will be presented to the award recipient at the AGM Lecture Dinner
of the Aircraft Division.
‧ The respective Engineering Faculty / School / Department of the university or tertiary
institution shall also announce the name and relevant information of the award recipient on
its website for public access, including photos taken at the award presentation ceremony
which will be provided by the Aircraft Division.

* A HKIE accredited Bachelor’s degree with honours in engineering or technology relevant
to the Aircraft Discipline is also eligible for this Scholarship. It may include BEng (Hons)
in Mechanical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Transport
Systems Engineering and Product Analysis & Engineering Design, etc
